Boundary layer effects on liners for aircraft engines
نویسنده
چکیده
The performance of acoustic treatments installed on aircraft engines is strongly influenced by the boundary layer of the grazing flow on the surface of the liner. The parametric study presented in this paper illustrates the extent of this effect and identifies when it is significant. The acoustic modes of a circular duct with flow are calculated using a finite sound fields found in current turbofan engines. Both the intake and bypass ducts are considered. Results show that there is a complex interplay between the boundary layer thickness, the direction of propagation and the liner impedance and that the boundary layer can have a strong impact on liner performance for typical configurations (including changes of the order of 30 dB on the attenuation of modes associated with tonal fan noise). A modified impedance condition including the effect of a small but finite boundary layer thickness is considered and compared to the standard Myers condition based on an infinitely thin boundary layer. We show how this impedance condition can be implemented in a mode calculation method by introducing auxiliary variables. This condition is able to capture the trends associated with the boundary layer effects and in most cases provides improved predictions of liner performance. & 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory
This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...
متن کاملDesign and Assessment of an Electrodynamic Loudspeaker Used in a Variable Acoustic Lining Concept
The acoustic impedance at the diaphragm of an electroacoustic transducer can be modified using a range of active control strategies, amongst which is “direct impedance control”. This technique employs a combination of feedbacks, one on the acoustic pressure and the other on the diaphragm velocity, to the loudspeaker electric terminals, allowing significant modifications of the acoustic resonato...
متن کاملAn investigation on fatigue failure of turbine blades of aircraft engines by high cycles fatigue test
Thermal stress, wear and material damage produce effects of high-cycle fatigue failures in aircraft engines. The loading configuration on turbine blades of aircraft engines consists of an axial load. The axial load is the centrifugal force combined with the tensile and compressive loads, caused by the natural vibrations of the blades themselves. Low-cycle fatigue and high-cycle fatigue loading ...
متن کاملDistributed Turboelectric Propulsion for Hybrid Wing Body Aircraft
Meeting future goals for aircraft and air traffic system performance will require new airframes with more highly integrated propulsion. Previous studies have evaluated hybrid wing body (HWB) configurations with various numbers of engines and with increasing degrees of propulsion-airframe integration. A recently published configuration with 12 small engines partially embedded in a HWB aircraft, ...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of the Effect of Flow and High Level Acoustic Excitation on the Acoustic Properties of Perforates and Orifices
Perforates are for instance used in mufflers for automotive applications and in acoustic liners for aircraft engines. In these applications they are often exposed to high level acoustic excitation in combination with grazing or bias flow. The paper is based on an experimental study of the nonlinear properties of these types of samples without mean grazing or bias flow as well as on a study of a...
